We recently finished painting 6167 (locomotive only, not the tender). As I've mentioned before we elected to use epoxy paint for the job, and it seems that it didn't come out right, as roughly half of the locomotive came out completely flat, with no gloss at all.

While scraping some paint of the tender, we uncovered an original square Monogram.

You can always shoot it with a gloss clear coat if gloss is what you want.

I despise glossy black. It goes back to the gloss on PRR 7002 and 1223 throwing off my otherwise wonderful light meters on my cameras back when they were on the main line in the mid-1980s.

I much prefer the semi-gloss on the 6167 in the photos.

What paint was used? I know from my experience with epoxy paint you have to get the finished coat on within 72 hours of the primer application. If not, the primer must be scuffed before applying the finished coat. The primer on 6167 was put on at least two or three months ago.
Temperature is also a huge factor. It has been pretty cool here in Southern Ontario for several weeks now.

Alex #4 is right, the semi-gloss is much more attractive and I suspect it will not show UV deterioration quite as readily. I am anxious to see her with the lettering and logos reapplied. You guys deserve quite a hand for your efforts. The city deserves some applause as well, for getting behind the project. Please let them know how much we appreciate their efforts, thus far. She needs to go under a weather hood or indoors.

I don't know what the plans are for the rods. At some point, supports for the jacket are going to be placed around the boiler, and a new jacket will be installed.

And yes, the engine was primed a few months ago! There are a few repairs that were planned for the engine, but some of them weren't completed before the engine was painted, not sure whats happening there.

Nice work Joe. The next time you cover that frame, use the silver tarps, not the cheap blue ones. The silver is UV resistant and last a lot longer. They are also a heavier base material with a tighter weave. Not quite as good but still better than the blue is the green. They fall in between the blue and silver in weight of the material and the tighness of the weave. If you watch the sale flyers, you will find the silver ones on sale at Harbor Freight occasionally. Also check with TSC and Lowes/Home Depot for sales.

I can’t wait to see it finished. What herald are you going to use on the tender? I have my preferences, but I’ll keep to my self on that one.

Who knows. Once the engine is finished, we may start work on the Tender next year or never, who knows...

As for which herald may be used, ultimately, it may come down to the flip of a coin.
