It should be interesting to see if and how well raffling off that model works. It has been my observation that unless you are into custom building model railroad buildings that rarely do completed train layouts or scale building bring in much money as half the fun is building it yourself. Perhaps the best outcome is that this model actually gets won by a local business that has a place to display it. One can only hope that the WV RR museum placed a part of their museum on the layout so as to generate free publicity if displayed in a local business.

The local model railroad club here in Albany, GA builds and raffles off a model train layout at the model train show each year. Materials and labor are all donated for the cause. It usually brings in a couple hundred dollars to off-set the cost of putting on the show. I would be nervous to offer cash, though...especially $500, as a guaranteed alternative to taking the layout home. But, maybe it will work better to generate more raffle ticket sales.

That's true, but I suspect that they'll be marketing this as something an adult could win and give to their children, especially since it's being raffled off the week before Christmas.

I'm guessing there will be some grandparents buying tickets and hoping to surprise a youngster on Christmas.

Meanwhile, I was also suprised that they're offering $500 cash as an alternate, hope this works out for them.
