Greetings,
I am looking for a source of baked enamel sign makers, or the modern day equivalent. Preferably a company that specializes in low volume runs. I can't stomach vinyl.
Thanks.

Vinyl may have its place, but that place is not anywhere near a steam locomotive.

Don't forget that some railroads did apply decalcomanias to there equipment including steam locomotives (CNR for example). Vinyl is far superior to decals.

Yes, I will concede that, joe. :-) Temporary vinyl herald appliques have been used to good effect on Strasburg's CNR power and on OHCR's GTW 4-8-4.

But vinyl or not, the pattern of the letters should be a perfect match to the original-- no modern "Helvetica" or "something close" will do.

An example of Vinyl's longevity can be seen on CNR 6213. It had Vinyl decals applied in 1985 and they are still on the engine, although they are not as shiny as they used to be and the colour is a bit faded. They were made by the same company that used to make decals for CNR (Canada Decalcomania).
