I saw in the current issue of Money Magazine that they have an aticle on the top vacation destinations in the U S. One of them is Utah's Heber Valley, and the Heber Creeper is mentioned. Lucky dogs...

Lucky dogs?? Free Advertising?? It is due to the efforts of community leaders, a great board of directors, the faith of the state legislature, dedicated employees, and the efforts of a volunteer program 'par non' that the "Creeper" has become what it is in the last 9-10 years.

With the hope of stimulating the local tourist industry, it was a group of locals that approached the State Legislature in the early 90's requesting an economic development grant to restart operations at Heber City. The State provided approximately 75% of the requested amount and "we" made do for nearly 8 years. With the purchase of the "Movie Train" collection, building of our depot (and paving of our parking lot), the 2002 Winter Games, and much more to come (we have Thomas at the end of May and first of June) -- there is great optimism at the Heber Valley Railroad. As they say "you ain't seen nuthin' yet!"

If we work it right, Jeff Terry won't be able to finish that history he is writing...it'll just go on and on and on...

I was referring specifically to the free plug in a widely read magazine. Every steam railroad in the country has a long sob story of the tribulations they went through to get where they are today. We all "deserve" free coverage. You got it, nobody else did. Therefore, you are lucky; itÂ’s ok to admit it.

Anonymously yours,

HKA

Didn't mean to appear to disagree with you HKA. WE HAVE BEEN LUCKY. Heard a statement that NBC charged upwards of $500K for 30 second spots during the Games--and we had close to a five minute exposure with the Today Show story. That $5 million dollar exposure also was free and lucky.

Instead, my intent of the above posting was to acknowledge the hard work that has gone into the resurrection of the line over the last 10 years. Yes, it's a sob story that parallels many others--but I have noticed over the years of reading various postings that there are individuals that are just beginning projects and it's my opinion that they need the stories (experiences) of others to guide them.

I have not seen us hiding any secrets around here. The Heber Valley Railroad is open to those who are interested in what seems to have worked for us. I have found this to be the general case throughout this community--especially last spring in attending FRA Shortline Regionals in Northern California. All museums and tourist lines we visited along the way were very gracious hosts and I thank them publicly on this board for being such -- together with all others that have shared on this board (anonymously and otherwise).

Thank You.

My mother always told me that luck is what you made it.

One of the things that interests me is the interaction between people; I try to notice the "people" aspects in whatever I do.

I have had the honour of working with the HVRR people twice now, and I'll put some items that stuck out like a sore thumb there:

1) Everybody worked with each others' strengths, not weaknesses.

2) There was absolutely no swearing, name calling, back stabbing, or one-upmanship.

3) Each and every person there treated me as a person; they would look me in the eye, ask me questions, go well beyond their "requirements" to be helpful. They treated me, a new volunteer, with respect.

I have been very lucky over the years to observe, and volunteer, at steam oriented places around the world. While I have met others at other railways who have the same attitudes and relationships, I have also seen places which were about to self-destruct because of negativity, the "old boys club", and other related issues.

So, does the Heber have luck, or are they all working together towards a common goal? Hands down, these people are a team, and as such will go far.

In obtaining permission to use some of the Olympic railroad images, one commercial photographer wrote about the Heber Valley & Nevada Northern volunteers: "It was great to meet the people behind the railroad...I was so impressed with these folks and their passion for this project."

More photos of 2002 Winter Olympic Railroading have been added at the link below. Look for the Olympic photo page near the top of the list.
