This came through on my Flickr feed. Aside from the former D&H units, I did not know that any other PA types were still around. http://www.flickr.com/photos/39923705@N07/3978423906/ Google translation is: The photo, taken in April 2001, shows the famous diesel-electric locomotive Alco PA-2, Class A1A - A1A, No. 600 of CPEF - Companhia Paulista Railway, popularly known as 'Jabiru', housed in the former offices of the company in Jundiaí, awaiting restoration. This began in June 2001 and to date, October 2009, was not completed. |

There's another photo in the same stream of the same(?) PA2 inside the shops with some automobiles on display: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39923705@N ... 753095738/ At least it's inside if not fully restored. Paulista RWY had three PA's exported in the '50s-- of which the existence and condition of have been the subject of some debate. One is reported to have been scrapped. The big Paulista RWY museum "Complex FEPASA" at Jundiai is fascinating to look at with Google maps. It's huge. |

I shot these same two Alco PAs, then numbered 7600 and 7602, in the Jundiai shops deadline in 1974. Doesn't look like much has happened since then. I believe the third Brazilian PA had already been scrapped at that time. Also present in the deadline were Alco RSC3s and many older electric locos, mostly of US origin. Other electrics were still in use, and one fond memory of that visit was a cab ride in "Little Joe" loco 6455. I wonder if any of those electric locos are still alive now. |

There were 3 Little Joe type electrics similar to the one shown that were sent to the Ferrocarriles del Estado de Chile They ran on the Santiago -Valpariaso line I photographed all of them in operation as late as 1984 |

Are you sure what was sent to Chile were US built "Little Joe" motors (2-D+D-2, GE 1947/48)? The electric locos shown in the photos along with the PA are 2-C+C-2s built by English Electric. Sorta similar shape, but a much smaller loco. In any event it's good to see that the PA is getting proper treatment. |

The locos we are seeing in that photo set are, indeed, not THE "Little Joes" built by GE for Russia in 1948, but similar locos. They most closely resembled a New Haven design, as I recall. Five of the "Little Joes" went from GE to Brazil. http://www.tsfr.org/~efbrazil/russa.html shows one of the Paulista (Brazilian, not Chilean) survivors; supposedly some still lurk at this location, although I remember hearing of one flipped on its side by copper thieves a while back.. |

The Joes in Chile where definately GE built If I recall correctly there where 4 rather than 3 numbered 2901-2904 these were built new for Chile Unfortunatly I dont have a slide scanner to post my Kodachromes from my time living in Chile |

Not to beat a dead horse, but although the Chilean locos looked similar in many respects, they were NOT "Little Joes" built for Russia and then sold elsewhere, as the Milwaukee, Paulista, and South Shore locos were:  This website says they're not even GE, but Baldwin-GE and Baldwin-Westinghouse: http://members.fortunecity.es/locomotor ... /locom.htm |

ADMIV is correct on the four 2900 class locos for Chile. They were one of those odd mixes of carbody builder vs. electrical supplier that generally only occurred in the export market. 2901-2904 had carbodies by Baldwin. Two went to GE/Erie to be equipped and the other two to Westinghouse/East Pittsburgh. The styling was somewhat similar to the GE-built "Little Joe" motors and they might have been mistaken for same at a distance. For the record Brazil had 5 of the Little Joes, numbered 6451-6455. Now, did any of these actually go elsewhere? |

2903 powered a 1995 TUT excursion in Chile. At the time it was billed as the last one operable. |

I was in Santiago last spring, and I looked and looked for the Chilean engines, but they were nowhere to be found, and weren't on display near the passenger station as I had heard just before leaving. Chris. |
