While all eyes were on Cleveland, Silk Road slipped two work cars out of Newark, NJ. NJT 5221 and 5223 are now stored at National Capital Trolley Museum. The Friends of New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center, Inc. own the cars. They needed to move the cars from Newark and NCTM had available indoor space. Bill Wall assisted with arrangements for this deal in his free time. The cars are stored in our new maintenance building.

When was 5221 taken out of service? That car would be the last thing I would expect to see on a modern transit system.

The car was used right up to a few years ago when the City Subway was modernized from PCC cars to LRV's and a new shop was built at the outer end of the line. Its hard to believe, but the old City Subway shop was under Neward Penn Station and completely inaccessible for deliveries of material. Anything they needed that couldn't be carried by hand throough the station was tranferred to the deck of this car at a convenient spot to get it to the shop.

Pete: I think you are referring to 5223. 5221 is the line car. 5223 was also used as the trash car for the subway stations. It was replaced in this service by a PCC car.
5221 was used until very recently, when it was replaced by a new self-propelled line car.

Wes: I do not recall seeing the longhorns on 5221 at NCTM. I suspect that they adorn the new line car in Newark.

BTW, there only two antique line cars that I know of still in service on transit systems; on Cleveland RTA and on San Francisco MUNI. Several others have gone to museums in recent years.

Art,

The long horns were removed and shipped inside the car.
