THE ALCO HISTORICAL & TECHNICAL SOCIETY- An Update 12/09

Since the last time I posted anything about our group here, some developments have taken place.
In October, we had our first Annual Dinner for the membership with 33 attending.Our speaker was Richard Steinbrenner, author of the book " A Centennial Remembrance" In November, a local newspaper gave us a nice write-up which resulted in several new members as well as many phone calls requesting information.
We now have 71 members and 10 Board members. We are only a few weeks away from getting our Non-profit 501c3 status.
We are working on a proposal for the City of Schenectady to acquire a building in the Alco Plant to convert into a museum. This building is 750 feet long and by our early estimates can house approximately 20 locomotives.This proposal also will include acquiring outside property for displays and parking as well as a rail connection to be re-established with a local railroad. We are also planning to rent some office space within an Alco office building to establish our home base.This could happen early next year.
We have several grants to apply for to start the process of meeting these goals.
