I know this topic gets visited from time to time, but seeing ADM IV's post about steam currently being marketed and mentioning these two 4-6-2s has me curious. Just what IS the status of these two locomotives (other than stored somewhere near Staunton/Verona)? Are they being brokered via a dealer? Or is the "for sale" implication much less formal, i.e. something being done via networking, wishful thinking, or what? I'm thinking the passenger equipment would go with the locomotive(s), but that's an assumption, and we all know about those.... |

I'm not at liberty to discuss the details, but I saw the actual "sales brochure" (folder of pertinent sheets, photos, etc.) for the Showalter stuff--the passenger cars, locos, etc.--on the desk of a certain railroad in the East some years back. So, yes, if you are actually seriously interested in the stuff and have some big unspecified amount of money, it can be yours. Rumors have varied on just what the situation is--you have to take it all, the price being high, condition of the stuff, whatever--but that's a rumor mill best engaged in by folks actually in a position to buy, fix, and/or operate the stuff. |

Thanks, ADM! Alas, no deep pockets here. Still, it's good to know something about what may transpire with the Virginia Central. I wish it could find a way to operate on one of the Buckingham Branch lines in VA, but the $ issue is probably formidable... |

I have the actual sales brochure. It is quite extensive, and lists more than just the coaches and CP Pacifics. If you have money, this is a good set, but don't approach them expecting to get them for peanuts, or a donation. I was suprised how much stuff they actually had. You would need a couple of boxcars, and a couple of flatcars, just to move the non rail equipment. You'd have a whole train moving all the stuff. Many years ago, I think about 98 or 99, maybe a bit earlier, there was a group up here in Ontario that had supposedly made a deal with the owners to acquire the equipment and move it all to Southern Ontario for a new passenger operation. Well, that never happened, the deal fell through, and the equipment remained where it was. I think they leased the coaches out to a shortline for santa trips or something like that a couple of years ago if I recall, but I could be mistaken. I have nothing to do with the owner, nor do I know how to contact them, I just thought I'd add a bit of info to the post. Ken Jones Jr. Niagara Railway Museum http://www.nfrm.ca |

I hope that they find a buyer who can give them what they want but I am afraid we've seen it play out before. An owner holds out for the big bucks so long they move on to the big roundhouse in the sky before the equipment sells. I can think of several places that would be able to make good use of their equipment. |

If indeed the potential sale is only for the whole kit-and-caboodle, then in this day and age I can't think of many who'd ante up the $. Possibly Ed Ellis' operation out west (they seem to have a good business plan and funding), but other than that, I can't think of any entity with both the $ and the track to acquire and run these assets. |
