As a pastor, I occasionally run across items with both religious and railroad interest. Recently, one of our Sunday School classes received a thank you note on a small folded card, with a photo on the front of the sender shortly after being hired by a railroad (he is in his 70's, I believe). Printed on the inside was a prayer I hadn't seen before, and I thought some of you might be interested. If not, please skip this topic! Having done several funerals for railroaders, this will be nice to use along with the hymn, "Life's Railroad to Heaven"! It is a little corny, but it is unique! I made one editorial change in [brackets], as "join" makes more sense than "and".

I have not seen it before, and do not know if it is attributed to anyone, or is anonymous.

"A Railroad Prayer"
Oh Lord, now that I have flagged Thee, lift up my feet from the rough road of life and plant them safely on the deck of the train of salvation. Let me use the safety lamp known as prudence, and [join?] all the couplings in the train with the strong arm of love, and let my hand lamp be the Bible. Heavenly Father keep all the switches closed that lead off to the sidings, especially those with a blind end. Oh Lord, if it be Thy pleasure, have every semaphore block along the line show the white light of hope that I may make the run of life without stopping. And Lord, give us the Ten Commandments for a schedule and when I finished on schedule time and pulled into the dark station of death, may the superintendent of the Universe say, "Well done thou good and faithful servant, come and sign the payroll and receive the check of eternal happiness."

This topic has reminded me of a prayer I heard many years ago that spoke of the train of salvation tying into the drawbar of the soul. As I recal the prayer was about as long as the one Mr Raynes posted. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
