Thanks for posting the report, sad though it is. A locomotive plant that I'm curious about is the Climax Locomotive factory in Corry PA. Is anything left of this plant?

This item in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette states that the Westinghouse Machine Co. also made locomotives. I am familiar with the Machine Company's production of stationary steam ENGINES, but not of locomotives. Does anyone know if they actually did build locomotives?

Was this plant part of ALCO at one time? The reason I am asking is that a certian 0-6-0 that I am familiar with was an ALCO Pittsburg Works engine being built in 1905.

Just curious,

JD,

Yes, your local 0-6-0 was built there along with NYC 6894, the 0-6-0 now at the Whitewater Valley Railroad. I think all of the surviving LS&I 2-8-0's were also built there.

I don't have my Westinghouse book handy right now, but as I recall, in the 19th Century, a Westinghouse company did build stationary steam engines. In the 20th Century, Westinghouse built diesel locomotives, one of which is preserved at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. In a joint venture with Baldwin, Westinghouse built numerous electric locomotives, several of which have been preserved.

There was a branch of Westinghouse that built farm equipment, including a line of vertical boiler traction engines and portable steam engines.

They may also be thinking of the Westinghouse Air Brake Co.; while it did not build whole locomotives; it was a major contribution to steam locomotive design.

There are/were 26 surviving Pittsburgh locomotives I am aware of to date; including the LS&I 2-8-0s. Several closed out steam sugar operations in Cuba, and at least one has been preserved. A 2-6-0T is also on display in Japan, an 0-4-0 is on display at the station in Duran, Ecuador.
