There are a few ANCIENT flat cars/gondolas shown in the postcard at this link. http://www.playle.com/listing.php3?KDL17321 Whats the deal? Do they still exist? It seems that if so, they may not be around for much longer. Old Train Cars Eckley Miner's Vill Coal Mine PA

It's been years since I've seen them, but I'm sure that they won't be going anywhere anytime soon since I don't think they are connected to live track, but I'm not certain of that. They look to be in rough shape. It's a shame that none of the locomotives that used to pull the cars was preserved. J.T. jtjjtb@aol.com |

J.T. The village at Eckley is authntic, but the tiny breaker and mine trackage was constructed as a prop for the movie the Molly Maguires in the late 1960's. There are a dozen or so steam mine lokies left from the anthracite region that we know of. There are probably more under culm banks. It seems someone digs one up about every 10 years. As for the mine cars, if they are authentic and not props, the wood decay is a non-starter. The cars' metal is all that is worht saving. The mines themselves changed out the wood all the time. There are hundreds if not thousands of authentic mine jimmies at the scrap yard in Childs, PA. Rob Davis trains@robertjohndavis.com |
