Just out of curiosity, are there any B23-7's preserved? From what I hear, a lot of them have been retired in the last few years.

it is my understanding that Ed Bowers has one in his collection a former conrail unit that spent alot of time in connecticut servicing the springfield line as well as the industrial spurs out of hartford

While not "preserved" these things still have some life left in em.

The East Penn has the ex-CR geometry train locomotive in service on the Quakertown Branch.

Delaware Coast Line operates two of them. I'm sure plenty of shortlines will hang on to them. http://rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.a ... clr&mid=14

We at East Penn actually have two. The one in Quakertown and a SP B23 5114 on the Octoraro Branch. We also roster three U Boats and Two B30-7's.

I'd love to see one of the Southern high hoods preserved. It'd complete the collection at TVRM and look good mated up with the GP30.

I seem to remember that when CSO (railtex/railamerica) took over the connecticut branchs conrail had sold a batch of b23-7's to them, most of those units at the time were on there last leg and kept the mechanical dept scrambling on a daily basis just to get them ready for the day, the reason for i believe for the purchase of the former cr units is the fact that they had amtrak approved cab signaling, i was in my early 20's at the time and only know of all this as i worked for the outside contractor that provided M of W services for CSO (all in all the Branchs on the railroad was in a sorry state from top to bottom) the running tracks had not seen much repair since maybe 85-86 and hartford yard was a site of derailments on a almost weekly basis in 96

I have to say I'd never thought i'd miss seeing them, as i grew up with them running on the manchester running track and got to know the CR crews that ran that job out of west springfield, there were some fond memories and really nice guys, its all a distant memory now, but i did get my first cab ride in a B23-7 at age 12

Well now might be you chance. Apparently a high hood B23-7 just showed up in Roanoke to be put in the NS storage line. Usually when locomotives enter that line they never leave intact.
