Our new friends at Sterling Rail have listed an ex-IC business car, the ex-New Haven sleeper Nutmeg State, and a former GPEX milk car (!!!) for sale: http://www.sterlingrail.com/547/class.php?id=131 The cars were part of Paducah & Louisville's office car fleet. Walt Lankenau |

That milk car turned HEP car is one of the oddest fates to befall one of these. It still "looks" like a milk car in most respects. Rob |

To be honest, Rob, I was completely floored a couple of years ago when I first saw the power car in a PAL office car special. It even has the original trucks! How many GPEX cars still exist? This is likely the only one still in service, rather than being used for storage in some yard. In a way, it's too bad that it's been "improved" so as to make it more valuable. It would be perfect in a New England museum. The only milk cars I'm aware of in museums are the butterdish at IRM and a couple of modern B&M cars at RMNE. Walt |

IRM also has had GPEX 1021 for a good number of years. When the museum was still running steam, it served as a stationary water bottle, with a pump installed in the gangway between tanks, to give thirsty steamers a drink between trips. Other than that, it's fully original. http://www.irm.org/cgi-bin/rsearch.cgi?freight=General+American+Pfaudler+Corp.=1021 |

IIRC, IRM has another one in non-original form, in modern IC paint, converted as a generator car, similar to the PAL one. The Bluegrass Railway Museum had one that came from either L&N or GM&O work service. The Museum of Transportation also has one that in the past visitors could walk through. It has undergone some body repair in recent years. |

Hi Walt, I don't have my list with me, but if memory serves the count of milk cars still resonably close to their milk service configuration stands as: wood D&H, North Creek, NY DL&W, Scranton, PA CV, body only, Barnet, VT steel, non GPEX Borden's tank, Union, IL B&M (2), Thomaston, CT B&M, Bellows Falls, VT B&M - reports of a couple of others scattered about Erie, Rochester, NY There are also some tanks from National Flats in VT and PA GPEX IRM, Union, IL (more than 2) MOT, St. Louis Bluegrass Museum, Cincy SRM, Duluth, GA WRM, Rio Vista, CA and I think 2 others that escape me now. Many of these cars wound up in company MOW service on the ICG Modified O&W body turned into house, Childs, PA HEP car, PAL, KY I am sure I am forgetting some... Rob |

RobertJohnDavis, I don't know much about your list, however a slight correction should be noted. For the GPEX cars: In Cincinnatti, at the Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnatti, they have a GPEX in some level of restoration. At the Bluegrass Railroad Museum, in Versailles, KY, we have a former GPEX now GM&O water car. The tanks are in it, and some of the piping, but not all of the amenities which would allow it to comfortably fit a passenger train. It was from the same group of 19 off the GM&O that the PAL car is from. James |
