I read a newsletter recently that stated its organization paid for worker's compensation insurance for volunteer hours. Does anyone do this?

Yes I have done this. North Star Steel requires workers comp for anyone working on their propery, so whenever we are on site I record the name of the volunteers and the hours worked. Then I take that number of hours multiplied by the minimum wage and multiply that by the premium amount. When it is time to report to the BWC I just make out a check for the total premium.

Our workers comp in Ohio is handled by the state, there is no private insurance company involved. Its very straightforward and easy to work with. I can't say what other states have in place.
