SEDALIA — The old rail car stopped rolling in 1937 when it arrived on the back of a truck to be placed beside Burlington Road in this small community. It’s a fixture along the old highway. Newspaper stories and passing motorists have made it a landmark and a marker.

At the rail car, you’re midway between Burlington and Greensboro. Hence, its former name, Midway Diner.

The demolition of so many old structures through the years, and some not-so-old ones, have made the rail car’s survival a wonder. It continues to exist without preservationists screaming for its protection. They, however, know it’s there.

Just to add the car is also the same length as ours approx 60ft and the same number of windows 16, originally 17 per side, i would say it dates from 1887-1895 period and is a Pullman product.

Just out of interest, supposing it came from that area somewhere, what railroad could have owned it ? I know nothing about NC railroads.
Also is there anyone in that area that could run out and see if the number is visible above the end doors?

Thanks

Mike

I am about an hour away from this car. I remember seeing it years ago on our way to the mountians to Boone and Tweetsie, but when they built new US70 and then I-40 we went the faster way.Southern Ry Line from Greensboro to Raleigh followed US70.Here is the address( 6269 Burlington Rd, Sedalia, NC, United States) put it in Google maps and you can see from street level.I will try to go and get some info on it next week. There is another one On Old us220 Near Bisco NC it was an Winston- Salem Southbound wooden car it may still be there it was gutted and roof was collasped in back in 90's.I will let you know what I find.

Thanks Alan,
Very much appreciate any help in identifying this car, it is exactly the same design and length as ours, if we could get inside it would take only a few minutes to find the LOT number (the Pullman order number, if it is a Pullman).

Keep in touch

Thanks
