The USS Olympia, world's oldest floating steel warship...needs an estimated $30 million in restoration and endowment funding.

Giving the ship back to the Navy is probably the most viable alternative right now. One possible solution to the current concerns would be the loan of a floating drydock and the temporary use of a tug to move it.

Isn't that problem of duplicative threads also known as "Pennsy 1361 Syndrome"?

PC,

Since the ship's continued existence is in potential danger, I'm going to keep this thread up and active since it is most definitely a preservation issue. Since no one here is involved with the Independence Seaport Museum, the potential for flame wars is minimal. The title also better explains the issue at hand.

IMHO, the destruction of the Olympia would be the equivalent of turning the Gettysburg Battlefield into a a giant landfill. It makes the problems with the SS United States insignificant by comparison.

In any event, here is the link to an organization that is apparently trying to do something positive about the ship. http://www.fotco.org.

I know nothing about the organization, but I would at the very least sign the petition as I have done.
