If any people who read this and/or post here are a teen themselves or know a teen railfan, you may want to pass along this bit of info. Since 1998 the NRHS and the NPS at Steamtown have been offering RailCamp, a summer-camp like program in Scranton specifically geared toward teen railfans. Topic such as historical interpretation, dispatching, and activities like doing welding, hot riveting, spraypainting, being the engineer on NKP 514, going into an inspection pit under a steam locomotive, visiting CP's Binghamton rail yard facility, and maybe even chipping in with one of their steam locomotive repair or restoration projects. I attended it in 1999 and 2000 and it was the best railfan experience ever, even better than riding several NS steam trips, some 765 trips, a 2317/3254 doubleheaded trip to Tobyhanna, and others. I think it is a great step to forming and teaching the next generation of railfans, preservationists, and rr employees. For more info you should probably check the official RailCamp website. I highly recommend this experience for all teen railfans!!
