You folks may remember the stunning success story of the restoration of Virginia & Truckee McKeen Car 22, unveiled last October in Carson City and reported on here as being prepared for final completion in April 2010, with a dedication on May 10th: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28312&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a http://museums.nevadaculture.org/dmdocu ... McKeen.pdf [NOTE: Adobe PDF document] Well, the V&T has apparently decided to take this a step further. We recently heard from associates who contacted us at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum regarding what we had on handicapped-access ("differently-abled," whatever, I ain't playing the PC game) conversion work, as we had planned for our former El Paso/San Jose PCC "7303". I referred them over to the Wilmington & Western, who had done some work in the past towards adapting a former PRR MP54 with a wheelchair lift. Long story short, it seems the V&T is looking to build a trailer for the McKeen Car which would serve as a handicapped-accessible passenger conveyance. The basis for the plans will be the trailers McKeen built for their own cars. A photo of one of these trailers, built for the Southern Pacific, is attached below. (That truck will be a hoot to fabricate.) More on the project is supposed to be posted at their website, at http://museums.nevadaculture.org/dmdocu ... roject.htm

My goodness gracious, that last link doesn't seem to work! What could possibly be the problem? |

I can assure all readers of this forum that there is no truth to the suggestion of constructing a trailer car for the V&T McKeen Motor Car. No truth, whatsoever. The McKeen Centennial celebration is scheduled for Noon on Sunday, May 9, 2010 (not May 10), 100 years to the day of the car being delivered to the V&T in Carson City, NV. Public rides on the car will be offered commencing at 1:30pm on May 9. Information on the event is posted on the website of the Department of Cultural Affairs; http://museums.nevadaculture.org Peter Barton Administrator, Nevada Division of Museums and History |
