Post subject:  1894 AT&SF reefer in Minnesota
The Ironhorse Central Railroad Museum has in its collection a former Duluth & Iron Range wooden reefer, No. 8011, one of 12 purchased by that road in 1901. It was built for the Santa Fe in 1894, we think as No. 887. The car was built with a Wickes cooling system that was changed over to a Moore system in 1914. The D&IR sold the car in the 1930s to the Duluth & Northeastern, where it was converted into a boxcar. The 8011 was sold to the IHC in 1973. I'm not an expert on wood reefers, but we think it may be one of the oldest, if not THE oldest wood reefer preserved. Does anyone know of similar preserved reefers from this time period?

There is at least one vintage, wooden reefer, from a similar time period, "preserved" out west. I say preserved in quotes, because it is in the desert, dried out, weather beaten of paint, and rusted all to heck. Might have been an early produce reefer fro Santa Fe or Espee, but definitely needs a total rebuild and paint, paint, paint, before it will make a decent museum exhibit. Now, the question is where? The answer is, I can't remember, but it's on a website I was researching for data on wooden reefers.

There are two ancient AT&SF reffer bodies in Lamy New Mexico. They came from a building in downtown Santa Fe, right across from the AT&SF depot. The building was built around the cars in the mid 1930's and torn down a few years ago. The cars were saved and moved to Lamy.

Below are a few photos of them from September of last year. Only one had markings visable, last weigh date and repack date was July of 1932 in Kansas City

Mid-Continent has a 1912-built wood reefer that was built originally for the D&IR by some obscure builder located in Minneapolis. It is in pretty good repair.

Orange Empire Ry Museum has a 1911 Santa Fe refrigerator car. The car has been living inside for years. The photo below was taken as it was being moved to the large "museum's back room" building. Follow the link for the history of the car.
