Post subject:  GE 70 ton locomotive peices parts weight question

Does anyone know the weight of the following components of a GE 70-ton diesel locomotive?

-Trucks
- Cooper-Bessemer diesel engine & all of ots components (cooling system, turbo etc)
- Main and Aux. generators
-Frame
-Cab
-Hood

I am trying to get a rough idea of what a 70 tonner would weigh once you removed the trucks and anything having to do with self propulsion (so you would be left moving the frame, hood and complete cab as a unit) so that I can get some idea of what it would cost to move the resulting shell by truck.

Thanks

Too bad you aren't trying to move a center cab 70 tonner, as I have the exact weights on it:

Each MG set (Cummins 6 cylinder NTC 335) 5,500 lbs.
Frame and cab 71,000 lbs.
Trucks 23,000 lbs. each

Thanks for the information. Now let's see if I am doing the math right;

Starting with a 70 ton object and removing the following:

-24 tons for the trucks (12 tons each)
-11 tons for the engine
-4 tons for the generators

should reult in a weight of 31 tons for the frame, cab and hood as an assembley

A couple more questions-

Does the 42 ton weight for the "cab & platform w/all equipment" include the engine, generators and hood?
(if so, the removing these items would result in a weight of approx. 25 tons for just the frame and cab, I am looking at the possibility of moving the locomotive about 650 miles by truck, so the less it weighs the better)

Thanks

The way the manual is written, I would say "yes". When we had our engine trucked, it was moved intact, less its' trucks and as I recall it was right around 40 tons, so I think the manual is close in its' estimate. We only had to move it about 50 miles.
