Saw this on the discovery channel, then went to their website. Couldn't resist spreading the news, but I'll leave it to the readers to judge the merits of this project. Maybe we could put a railroad museum on board?

Never mind a museum, they will need a train to get from one place to another on this ship!

I saw the program too, seems possible when you look at the enormous size of cruise ships now.

And while all this goes on the poor old ocean liner "United States" rots in harbor with some of us desperately looking for ways to save and preserve her. The last of her kind still in non static display condition, bearing the name of her country and the only ocean liner solely American owned since her creation. If one wants to speak of Freedom Ships, with the "United States" history, she could be a true Freedom Ship.Look this grand dame up on the web any ideas to facilitate her preservation would be appreciated.

Sorry to derail your post, Hume, but this ol'girl's got a special place in my heart. Didn't think you'd mind too much since we're all about preservation here.

Finally, a ship that will replace the Titantic in the annals of history when it sinks!

I don't mind at all. In fact, it adds some legitimacy to the thread.

Anybody know what's going on with the old SS U.S.?

Having seen this mighty ship up close at Pier 84 in Philadelphia, I'll say it surely is impressive. At present, they are still discussing ways to save it, ranging from floating casino/hotel to operating cruise ship. I think the general hope is for something static like the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Unfortunately, many of the original furnishings were auctioned off some years ago. There are at least two websites devoted to this ship; we mentioned them in News Briefs early on in RyPN. Here's one below:

yes, it is a mighty ship. I live just west of center city Philly. I remember when It first came in. Too bad more isn't going on with it. I'm not up to date on her past, but I heard that she was floating somewhere for some years before being brought in. Any one know about her history, besides being the one time fastest ocean liner.

The website above has all the info. Also, note that it has links to at least 12 other websites devoted to the ship. It appears there is an inititive to make it federally-owned and obtain money from Congress. Looks like the main drive now is to bring it to New York as a floating display.

Anyone know how the projects to build a new Titanic replica ship are going? There were two announced, one in the U.S. and another in South Africa.

just curious about another nutty maritime idea.
