Another phenomenal weekend in Maine! Friday through Sunday, 80+ volunteers accomplished numerous tasks including a major culvert replacement project just south of Alna Center -- surfacing, lining and tamping several hundred feet of mainline north of Alna Center...finish carpentry projects were completed inside the freight house at Sheepscot and Alna Center station, electrical work continued in the shop, and several painting projects were completed. Shop work included machining and assembly of the front wheelset for No 11 -which included pressing wheels and sweating on tires. And of course the non-stop kitchen crew kept the small army fed and energized... below are a few images from the weekend.

Note the prominent product placement of that peculiar Maine beverage in the last photo. I think it's in front of a certain Connecticut Yankee.

Just as a bit of thought:

How much more right-of-way/track is there for the WW&F to build for their planned total mileage? Track-building is fun, of course, but there's no easy way to channel that easily-trained grunt labor into, say, a carpentry crew to build, say, a new station or a trackside mill for the railroad to "serve," or to build a boiler or a new passenger coach............

And thanks for showing the food prep crew. That aspect of volunteer support often tends to get forgotten in such major league efforts!

For the record, turnout was as follows:

Friday -- 59
Saturday -- 83
Sunday -- 42

There may have been some folks who didn't sign the book, too. I'm always amazed, especially by folks who come from as far as Pennsylvania, Virginia and even Florida to join the fun.

Note that the kitchen is the only place that two-way radios are allowed on the WW&F!

Which says that your kitchen is big enough to need two-way radios to communicate?

Oh yeah? Let's see, new station -- check; trackside mill (working on it now) -- check; new boiler -- yep, done that, too. Three out of four ain't bad.

At least two or three RMNE folks were at WW&F this past weekend, as they usually are twice a year.

What's that nice modern shop?

That comment about two-way radios reminded me of the time I was in Sacramento (CA) and was taking photos of the State Railroad Museum excursion train. The fireman had been holding his radio outside the window (presumably for better reception), and as soon as he saw my camera, the hand-held disappeared into the cab. Communication comments aside, what a heartwarming story about volunteer teamwork! Excellent photos captured the spirit of the weekend. I especially liked the sunset train photo and the "after-party" with live music and Moxie. Was the lady in the corner playing a "washtub bass"?

Thanks all. The shop in the photo belongs to a friendly neighbor located about a mile from the museum...
