I was reading a Yahoo Group dedicated to the BNSF ex-AT&SF "Peavine" line between Flagstaff/Williams Jct. and Phoenix. Said group has an automatic e-mailer that triggers when a westbound (geographically southbound) enters the division at West Williams Junction.

One of the regulars said yesterday after one westbound was "broadcast":

"Probably the Z-CLOPHX, wasn't able to see it! Line of Sight was Blocked by the GCRR 4960 on a test run and the SNOWFALL!"

So a modern railfan is complaining that a steamer being tested--in a snowfall--is blocking his view of a modern freight. I hope he was being sarcastic.

There was a baseball player who played for the LA Dodgers many years ago; when someone asked why he was such a good hitter, he replied, "I got different strokes for different folks." The same applies to railway enthusiasts and preservationists. I knew one transit fan who liked PCC and older streetcars, and even co-authored a book about trolley buses, but had relatively little interest in steam locomotives or even large interurban cars. Many railway museums specialize in steam, electric or diesel powered railroading; I can think of only two that cover all three forms to any extent. Much as I like to see and hear Ventura County #2 (2-6-2, Baldwin 1922) run at Orange Empire, the sounds of the three diesels with Alco 539 six-cylinder turbo engines reminds me of the days when I worked for a Class I railroad and thus have more "old home week" appeal to me. And most of my volunteer efforts concentrate on the Pacific Electric and LA Ry trolley-powered fleets.

Not sure he was complaining about that, maybe he was just saying he couldn't see it, since he was busy watching 4960 in the snow?
