I was reading a Railroad Model Craftsman magizine from August 1974. In this perticular one, they are celebrating the 35 years of the SW1. There is one perticular photo that I would like to know more about: The old modifided trolley(?) South Shore #601 is pulling is from whom? What happened to it?
Thanks to anyone who knows!

I'm sure someone who knows copyright law will help out here, but AFAIK, it isn't legal, nor proper, to post copyrighted material on the internet without permission of the copyright holder.

It is most likely the 1100, which is now at the Illinois Railway Museum. See their website for details.

The specifics of copyright law do take several textbooks to cover, and just as you think you understand them, either Congress changes the laws once again (at the behest of Disney lawyers/lobbyists fighting to retain the rights to their last original idea, Mickey Mouse), or another paradigm shift occurs (photocopiers, scanners, the Internet).

The posting of a scan of a photo from a 36-year-old issue of RMC in an effort to seek historical information is of FAR less concern to the folks at Carstens Publications (who, in all probability, only secured one-time rights for the use of the photo to begin with) than the somewhat common practice of unethical people who compile, for example, a CD of PRR-related articles and drawings from the same magazine's history and sells copies on eBay or at train shows. (Such compilation CDs of copyrighted material show up all the time on eBay, as I understand it, and I've had my attention called to at least one that violated my own copyrights.)

As a rule, if you post a low-resolution photo scan, if you're not profiting from the reposting of the photo, AND you're doing it in such a way that you're not depriving someone of potential income (does Carstens even have any copies of 1974 RMC's to sell you? I doubt it....), you might be in technical violation of the laws, but Carstens is hardly going to expend the effort to even send you a "cease and desist" e-mail, let alone a letter from an attorney.

Disney, the O. Winston Link Estate/Museum, or the Denver Public Library (holder of the Otto Perry Collection), on the other hand..............

I took a look at the 1100 and it sure looks like the one in the photo. Thanks for the info. As for the copyright laws, I just wont post the picture. =] Problem Solved.

Aaron -

Your post brings up another question. For years, SW1 # 601 was the only diesel on the old Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Railroad. Anyone know what happened to it? Did it eventually go to scrap?

This online roster reports that said SW1 was still in West Point, Misssissippi as Babcock & Wilcox #7 as late as 2008: http://icrr.net/rosters.htm

I think there are a few SW-1's in operable condition around the country, and Southern Pacific 1006 is being restored to its original appearance at Orange Empire in Perris CA.

I sent a note to Babcock & Wilcox about ex-South Shore SW1 #601 and they advised me that the locomotive has been scrapped.

Well thats another SW1 from he world. Im sure a ton of muesums needed a switcher to pull some passenger trains; although I guess the company needed the money more.

If nobody asked for it (and I have heard or seen no evidence that says anyone did), you can't blame the company for disposing of their asset in a fiscally responsible matter.
