Late-night fire in NL fills downtown with thick smoke Published on 03/31/2002 Dana Jensen / The Day Firefighters train a stream of water onto flames coming from the Central Vernmont Railroad roundhouse building on Fort Street early this morning. New London –Firefighters were called to a building in flames on Fort Street near Crystal Avenue, directly under the Gold Star Memorial Bridge late Saturday night. Thick smoke filled the air and could be seen throughout the downtown area. There were no reports of injuries, but a second alarm was called about midnight. An old roundhouse from the Central Vermont Railroad was in flames. The fire was still burning early this morning, and the roof and walls of the wood-frame building had collapsed. Mutual aid was requested from the Waterford Fire departments. Wonder what was lost in this one? lamontdc@adelphia.net |
