For the serious researcher and the casual history buff, we're putting the "history" into the National Railway Historical Society 2010 convention by adding some unique opportunities:

As an added attraction to the scheduled train excursions and activities of the 2010 National Railway Historical Society convention, Steamtown’s Park Historian, Pat McKnight will lead tours to the park’s archives. Groups meet at the Visitor Center at 10:00 A.M., from Monday through Thursday, June 21 -24, 2010. This walking tour will lead conventioneers to the DL&W Railroad Office and Stores building, located within the park grounds. If you wish to participate, wear sturdy shoes, and prepare for walking a flight of stairs or two. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes. After the tour , visitors may stay to research the park archives or library resources. You may also make an appointment for research. Contact Ranger McKnight at (570)340-5193, or e-mail at pat_mcknight@nps.gov.

In addition to railroad magazines and general railroad history books, the library offers opportunities to explore some historic documents germaine to the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, the Lehigh Valley and Erie Railroads. Other railroads are also represented in some files also.

In 2006, the National Park Service accepted the donation from the Tri-State Chapter of the extensive files of the DL&W railroad’s Chief Engineer office. All types of documents in this treasure trove of information are being conserved and documented in the Steamtown curatorial offices. In addition to these 200,000 or so articles, the chapter has also donated thousands of hours in tracking what each piece of paper contains. Some are blueprints of property. Others are engineering drawings, charts, reports that affected the planning and operation of the railroad. Some date back to the 1840s. As these documents are being recorded, the originals are being photoscanned for reference. The originals can be very fragile, and are stored in the park archives.

Employee files of the Erie and Lackawanna railroads were curated by volunteers in the park over the last decade or so. Cabinets full of Lehigh Valley Railroad correspondence are in the process of conservancy. Each piece adds to a fuller knowledge of the railroads as they operated in their days.

Steamtown’s library is located in the former DL&W Office and Stores building. This building also serves as administrative offices of the National Park staff. Admission to the park is $6.00 per adult, aged 16 and older. Check your ticket envelope for the pass in your registration packet. This must be validated at the Ticket and Information booth, located by the Visitor Center. America the Beautiful passes, Golden Age and Golden Access passes are honored at the ticket booth to waive admission fees. The library, located in the Office and Stores building is handicapped accessible. The steps leading to the archives are not.

Enjoy your visit to Scranton. Share our rich railroad and cultural heritage.

We're also excited to announce that the Lackawanna Historical Society of Scranton will be welcoming NRHS members during the week of our convention. The society is headquartered at the historic Catlin House, a very short short walk from our convention site. On Tuesday June 22 the Lackawanna Historical Society will remain open until 8pm and offer displays and informal programs geared towards the railroad enthusiast. No advance purchase or reservations are required for this event.
