Per a Flimsies article, the so-called Lincoln Funeral Car on Ozark Mountain Railcar's sale list is being sold to Kloke Locomotive Works, the builder of the replica Leviathan.

This is also indicated on the company's website under "projects."

Another late-era "Lincoln Funeral Car" is the Chicago and Alton #8 or #19 which operated at the Chicago Railroad Fair 1948-49. Like so many artifacts from that event, we wonder why they did not get preserved.

I have to wonder if getting this car is part of the proposed "Steam Into History" project to operate a replica Lincoln's Gettysburg Address train in PA. The old trucks on the C&NW coach remind me of those I have seen on old CB&Q waycars. Quite a few of these were saved and some are preserved while others are derelict.

Interesting comment posted on that Facebook page:

In 1970 I bought an old Reading Railroad engine to run up and down the now dismanteled Ma and Pa rail line. The boiler was shot, and I had to scrap the engine because of cost.

I didn't know a Reading steam locomotive had lasted until 1970 and was subsequently scrapped, I wonder what it was...

I read that bit a few months back on the Reading steam locomotive.
Though interesting, I figured it was a good fish tale until someone offered
proof one way or another.

There is a little mention of the Lincoln train at the Railroad Fair by Ward Kimball.
The rest of his story in this interview is pretty interesting too.

Another car of the Lincoln Train was the Pioneer, said to have run on the Chicago
to Springfield segment. This was displayed at the 1890 Worlds Fair and it survived
until the mid 20th Century.

A quick bit of Google detective work shows that the Ma & Pa excursions were apparently done with George Hart's equipment. This video shows 1286, and the comments mention 1238 and 972.

They aren't Reading and all survived. There was mention of a Reading caboose on another webpage, maybe that got cut up at some point?

Here's a fairly extensive list of "Recent losses", steam cut up after 1959.
http://www.steamlocomotive.com/lists/re ... sses.shtml

No Reading locos appear on the list.

Bob -

If this is a list of steam locomotives cut up after 1959, shouldn't Reading 4-8-4 #2123 be on this list? I think this is the T-1 that was kept around for a while as a parts source for the operable Northerns used on the Iron Horse Rambles. Come to think of it, weren't a number of Nickel Plate Road Berks and Illinois Central steamers cut up after 1959? I think that perhaps this list has the wrong date on it. Probably meant to show a year much after 1959.

Like all lists of that nature, it's probably incomplete.

I also have to wonder if he only focuses on engines that were in excursion service or otherwise "preserved" in some manner (parks, museums, etc), and then lost, rather than say steam in a class 1 deadline that subsequently got cut up.

George Hart also used Reading shop switcher 0-6-0 #1251 on the Ma & Pa. It's now at RRM of PA.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

That's it. Wes Barris was putting this list together as he was made aware of recent loses; the "preserved" ones were more well known to the general public, so he found out about them relatively quickly.

Weren't there a trio of locomotives being used as stationary boilers until the time frame of this document, then scrapped? I am sure there are others that can be added; while there is an update date at the bottom that shows this webpage has been updated recently, I don't know if Wes is still updating it or not.

There is a contact button at the bottom for anyone who wants to submit new entries. I would recommend doing that, and hopefully he will update the document at a later date.

Three Norfolk and Western Class A 2-6-6-4's survived until 1964, 1202, 1218 and 1230 as stationary boilers for Union Carbide in Charleston, West Virginia. Of course, F. Nelson Blount purchased the 1218, parts were cannibalized from 1202 and 1230. 1218 was sent north to Vermont, while 1202 and 1230 were soon thereafter scrapped. 1218 then went from Steamtown USA to the then Roanoke Transportation Musueum in 1970 and then everyone knows about its removal from the RTM in 1985 and 5 years of excursion service for Norfolk Southern from 1987-1991 returning to the now Virginia Museum of Transportation in June 2003.
