The Province of British Columbia has signed a lease agreement with the District of Squamish that will see the Royal Hudson #2860 moved to Squamish and displayed at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. The West Coast Railway Assn. will be responsible for the display, upkeep and restoration of the locomotive. The lease term is for 15 years with renwewal in 5 year increments. The ultimate goal is to return the locomotive to operating condition. A full assesment will be carried out and funds raised before any work starts on the locomotive. Fundraising initiatives involving both individual and corporate sponsorships are being developed. This will certainly not be a quick restoration, but one that is carried out very carefully. It is hoped to have #2860 back in operation in time for the 2010 Olympics, should they be held at nearby Whistler mountain. http://www.wcra.org gferguson@aebc.com |

I think that this is great, assuming the WCRA can handle the restoration. (I have no idea...) BTW - I wrote a letter to: Mrs. Marion Lay Chair, Board of Directors Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation Suite 500 - 375 Water Street Vancouver, BC V6B 5C6 giving her my view from my experience at Salt Lake as to what is possible to do at Vancouver. We'll see what happens. I'm sure that other letters of endorsement for steam to Whistler would not do any harm... :-) > This will certainly not be a quick > restoration, but one that is carried out very > carefully. > So what is going to happen to the 3716???? Because several groups have asked for Consolidation #3716, the B.C.Government has declared a one year holding period while they assess in detail all of the options for the future of the locomotive. The only given at this point is that the locomotive will not leave the Province. http://www.wcra.org gferguson@aebc.com |
