Fascinating! If this comes about, it will be like 1966 again!

Maybe, just maybe, some influence will be felt in Jacksonville (although I wouldn't hold my breath for it).

One of the interesting points was a comment by CEO Wick Moorman, who said, "We have a fascinating history, and we have a compelling message about how today's railroads support jobs, competition, and the economy. It is a forward-looking message that resonates with people everywhere." This echoes the late David P. Morgan, who thought the old-time steam trains served to emphasise the new and the modern--and, I might add, have the most wonderful sound.

His has been an incredible week!!! But it is tempered by the trestle fire on C&TS and the derailment on the secret city train.

But this is.... EPIC..... My children will get to see BIG STEAM, on the main....

I am glad the 4501 will be green this time around for a celebration as large as this. Don't get me wrong I know that Southern 4501 (and 722) for that matter were freight engines, but I always thought the 01' looked classy in green and it made a strong impression when I first saw her in steam in Asheville, NC in June 1991. I've had the opportunity to ride behind her 6 times. Twice while still in NS excursion service and 4 times on the Chatooga and Chickamauga trips, 3 times in green and 3 times in black. At least 630 will be painted black so that should be a compromise for some of the historically accurate purists out there. The fact is though that 4501 encountered many people over the 30 years she wore the green paint scheme from 1966 until 1996 when she was repainted into the Southern Railway freight paint scheme. Regardless of what paint job she emerges in, I'm looking forward to help celebrating 4501's 100th birthday next year as well as 630's rebirth later this year. This is definitely a good year to be a fan of Southern Railway steam.

I'd love to see her back in black, but there is no question she must be green for this endeavor. It is another unpredictable chapter in the life of a beloved machine. Man I hope Bill Purdie is able to appreciate the news.

Personally, I hope "The Boss" is there on her first trip, in his usual spot on the fireman's seatbox (in a green worksuit, chewing on a big cigar and giving the "royal wave" to the folks trackside with his yellow gloves........, with Paul Brock firing!!!! ) That truly would be "Glory Days"
