| Post subject: | New Orleans & Great Northern |
Looking for historical info re the New Orleans and Great Northern RR which ran from New Orleans through Bogalusa, Louisiana and then to Jackson, Miss. Started abt 1906 and was sold to GM&O abt 1929. It is my understanding that it was owned for a time by the Great Southern Lumber Company. NO&GN was founder by the Goodyear Brothers (Frank and Charles)two major players in the PA. logging industry. (nothing to do with the tire guys). The Brothers Goodyear also built the ill-fated Buffalo and Susquehanna RR...later portions of the that line became the Wellsville, Addison and Galeton RR. Major info on this can be found in the "Logging Railroads of Pennsylvania book on the Goodyears. I belive it is one of the volumes recently reprinted by the RR Museum of PA. All of the Goodyear lines began as adjuncts of their logging enterprise, and evolved into "mainline" carriers. NO&GN was FAR better built than the B&S....none of the B&S operates today...NO&GN was absorbed into the old GM&O, I belive. WHERE it ended up in the post ICG world, I don't know! Hope this was > a help. > Mike Gellner (Former Pennsylvanian) The CORRECT title of the book is as follows: "The Goodyears : An Empire in the Hemlocks" Book No. 5 in the Series Logging Railroads of Pennsylvania, by Thomas T. Taber III, Pub. 1971. The chapter on the Bogalusa operation and the N O & G N in this book, was apparently condensed from a book entitled "Bogalusa Story" by Charles W. Goodyear II. I have no info. on this book at all, save the credit refrence in Taber's book. Try contacting the Public Library in Bogalusa for info on it. Good Luck!
