All those old units (rebuilds of RS1s) are very long gone. Below is a link to an Alaska Railroad roster. Engine numbers on the left, if highlighted in blue or underscored, will bring up a photo of the locomotive or unit. http://www.alaskarails.org/glance/complete-roster.html The road had some interesting steam power, including some handsome if light 4-8-2s and a number of USATC (US Army Transportation Corps) S-160s (GI 2-8-0s), a number of which were sold to Spain. Page the roster is from: http://www.alaskarails.org/ARR-at-a-glance.html Enjoy. |

I never really cared for the RS-1's, I came across a picture the other night and they just didn't appeal to me. A little off topic... Just looking at that roster, they had some nice steam engines! Baldwin 801 & 802, 4-8-2's, and 4-6-2's 901 & 902 were some beautys! |

Took a second look at the roster, found some other engines besides the S-160s went to Spain: http://www.alaskarails.org/glance/Langreo.html Don't you wish those engines, and the 4-8-2s, were still around today? |

I was amazed to see that quite a few were exported, unfortunately only 4 or so were ever put into service. The one tender still in existence is unique though, figured it would have become scrap by now. An interesting side note is that all four units used in the 1985 movie "Runaway Train" are still in existence. GP40 #3010 is still in service on the ARR, F7 #1500 is on display, and GP7's #1801 ans 1810 have been sold off to other railroads. |
