K4s 1361 as viewed last week of June, 2010

Most of the K4s is sheltered and indoors. A great deal has been done to it in a favorable and forward manner. Most of her parts are stacked on a flatcar (friction bearings), with some are laying outdoors, behind the shop, either in open wooden crates or one the ground. I understand that some are currently in Altoona.

Are all these parts the ones that were taken off the engine or due to go on? If the latter is the case, them boyz in Altoona are sure gonna have their hands full with this puzzle! They look worse than when it went in!! JEEZ!!

I must remind you, the bulk of the pieces are in storage and protected. Furthermore, there is a Rosetta stone at RMPA, and across the street. No doubt, a competent steam restorer can have the 1361 reassembled, as long as the parts stay together. Some of the pieces stored outdoors may be replaced, and have only value as display items. Example: the smoke box section is the old piece, as the boiler currently has a new smoke box attached.

I would think that there may be some real educational value in the "used" parts. I imagine a display that shows the old parts, explains what they are, and how they are worn out. A further step might be geared especially toward preservationist that explains how these parts were "renewed" or how the new parts were fabricated.

Worse case..... I'm sure somebody wants to buy the old backhead of 1361. That would look pretty impressive in my living room.

Interesting to see that 2124 and the GTW Mountain have moved back behind the shop. I hope thats temporary until they can be repainted (again.)

Each locomotive is being stripped of asbestos and given new boiler sheathing. They are doing it right, too. Checked out NKP 759, and she's getting plenty of expert attention, but only cosmetically at this time.

Awhile ago there was alot of news coming out of Altoona about 1361. Have things been started or are they still in the planning stages? I should note I'm talking about the recent news found here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29522&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=1361

Without rehashing the old round & round...

A lot of the parts (but not all) seen in the above pictures were replaced, ie firebox components, smoke box etc... How much of the replacement parts will have to be replaced is a matter for those wiser than myself.

As stated, I hope all these rusted parts have already been replaced, and just "junk parts." I'm surprised her boiler and whatnot is still sitting there, I heard a rumor awhile back, I believe someone posted a comment on a Youtube video, that her boiler was shipped out last June?

And Emmo, I highly doubt it yet, considering at least half the parts are still at Steamtown.

That's kind of what I figured but had hoped that maybe they had started to gather parts and actually ship them back to Altoona, especially since supposedly they wanted her under steam within a year,

Like many people, I am glad that they have plans on at least partially restoring her, but I just don't understand why they don't fully restore her. Since she'll be ripped apart anyway.

buy yourself a model of a K4 or look up plans in MR or whatever you can get her back together.

Wish bowser quit making kits, OBTW, just reminded myself, I have a Bowser K4 now...hmmmmmmm
