765 Rollerbearing Update and Shop Work

Work on Nickel Plate 765's tender bearings has nearly reached the halfway point.

After lifting the tender (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28829&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=765+upgrade), the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has dismantled the tender trucks and their various components for cleaning, inspection, organization, and for some, shipment to ORX for the upgrade to roller bearing wheel sets.

And among other projects, the valve cages are being trued. The interior of the bored and honed right side valve cage.

Thanks Nathan for posting these pictures. That transverse bolster he's washing has a lot slime coming off it.

So, Kelly, does that mean she'll have even MORE of a "shotgun" exhaust when you're done, than she does now? <g>.

Anyone know how I can access the photos in the first post above? I just have 7 of the dreaded white boxes with the red "x" in each.

Are your cookies turned on in your browser? That's all I could fathom.

Paul,

Not sure about the exhaust -- I'd imagine you could look to the nozzle/petticoat/smokebox for a little more bang -- but the truing is intended to remove a slight musical "tune" that the valves play when reaching their end of their stroke, which does mean less interference for the shotgun song!

Isn't it amazing just how many parts are in a tender truck? When we had the 1522's all apart it looked like they covered an acre.
1522 had somewhat of a chirp to her exhaust when working lightly. We never could figure out why. We suspected there may have been a small cavity somwhere in the exhaust path.

The 765 and tender were reconnected yesterday afternoon following delivery and installation of our new rollerbearing wheel sets.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the shop, some familiar colors are showing on NKP 451:

When this happens, before you give up try right clicking on a red X and you should get a drop down menu. On there you might find an option of; "Show Picture"
Click on that and see what happens. Usually it works.

I'm guessing that all new journal boxes and wheels were made up for this. Did the tender truck frames require any modification? I had always wondered what it would take to convert plain bearings to roller bearings.

so the friction bearings were 6.5 x 12 as well as the new rollers being 6.5 x 12. what size wheels and what wheel specs were used. what is the weight on the trucks?

I am not involved in this project, but I converted several passenger cars for the Steamtown Foundation in the '80's. It requires cutting the front of the journal box off to allow access (and reading by hotbox detectors), cutting more clearance where the rear dust guard seal was, and welding a hardened liner in the roof of the jounal box. The rollerbearing adapters should fit right in where the old friction journal wedge used to be.

ORX's work appears identical to the conversion I have seen on some EMD switchers (short the Buckeye truck part!)

I'll probably never get used to the adapted look.

Buckeye trucks did have a designed rollerbearing.

perhaps paint the roller bearings area black. Did you keep the cutoff parts of the journals? perhaps just as a cosmetic look they can hook on when not in operation, just a crazy idea.
