A few years before, between Marietta and Columbia, across the Susquehanna in Lancaster county: The Sunday evening of August 9, 1896 will be long remembered by citizens of Marietta and Columbia because it was on that night that the tragic trolley accident at the foot of Klinesville hill occurred in which six persons were killed and sixty eight were injured. The overloaded car was bringing people back from a concert at Chickies Park and got out of control coming down from Klinesville to Columbia, jumping the rails at the curve at the toll gate opposite the entrance to Laurel Hill Cemetery. http://www.mariettapa.com/trolley.html |
