We need to buy 100%-cotton wiping waste for wiping down 4-6-2 S.P. 2472. The oily waste is then soaked with kerosene and used to light off the oil-fired boiler.

This company makies about 50 different grades of 100%-cotton waste:

So I am wondering if anyone on RYPN has a recommended spec.

Also it would be interesting to get a copy of the old journal box packing waste spec - do you have a copy?:
Association of American Railroads, Manual of Standards, Specification M-905, New Waste for Journal-Box Packing.

Thanks!

Doug,

You are going to want to look for non-dyed, non-stain protected waste. Getting the cotton (or wool) without any stain protector already applied is the hard part.

On my other hard drive I have the old Army spec. IIRC the primary spec was fiber length of 18", non-dyed, non-treated wool waste. I will have to finally get around to removing and mounting the old drive into an external box. When I was looking for the wool waste to make new journal packing pads for the move of the P&R 910, I was unable to find a supplier (for less then 2500# lot). One place I never got time to get to (as I was told about it after the move) was to talk to one of the smaller yarn manufacturers, as they tend to deal with smaller lots and buy untreated long fiber wool, so they can dye and treat to match their needs.

Doug -

WRM buys its wool journal waste from Miller Waste Mills in Winona, MN.
http://www.millerwastemills.com/

They also sell cotton wiping waste.

We have about one bale of Mil-Spec cotton waste which you are welcome to

We also have three boiler tubes and a piece of flue material for Robert Dollar #3.

PM me or Dave Johnston if you want to get the waste and/or the tubes and flue material.
