TVRM Spy Shots, 4501, 630, 6914 ;)

Made the run down there on Sunday, snapped some pictures for everyone here to see. Sorry they are not the best. 28 days left on 610, and no updates about the NS program. Seems they have removed the frame from 4501's old tender, and will build new tank for 630. You can see all the pictures if you go to be album

good idea, they can get her all painted up, put a fog machine in the stack and shove with a diesel......

It is to power the air compressor for firing up through the blower. They are not good for much else.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Sorry for asking this question, but I might have missed it if it was already posted, an7 estimated time frame for either of them to return to steam?

630 is suppose to be done end of summer to either kick off the NS steam program or run fall foliage trips as 610 will be laid to rest soon. 4501 is hoped to be done by next summer for her birthday party, however, it's all about the money, i've heard 250k to 500k. If NS throws their weight behind the project, its much more likely to happen. None the less, they said she is rolling into the shop the moment 630 rolls out.

This past weekend I sent a piece of mail out for a small contribution toward the 4501 restoration fund. Every penny counts. Every dollar counts . Every contribution counts.

With regards to 4501 in the first 3 pictures and most other steam locos lying in disrepair, in a dead line, or awaiting restoration, once all the rods are off, how to the drivers NOT sit all facing the same? What would constitute the counterbalances to sit in opposite areas or directions from the others? Wouldn't they all just sit the same way no matter if the rods were on or off?

One would think so, but not exactly. Just pull the locomotive through a few turnouts and around even the slightest curve a few times, and the drivers will get out of kilter.

I was part of the crew from KRM that went to Ft. Wayne to get C&O 2716 ready to ship back to Kentucky. C&O 2-8-4s have an interesting rod configuration where the side rod that connects the third and fourth pair of drivers is part of the main rod assembly. The main rods had been dropped, and the locomotive had been moved back and forth a few times on the leads to the shop. The driver was about 180 degrees from where it should have been. We had to chain it and grease the rail to get it moved around just enough to reconnect the rods.

It has been reported somewhere that NS will be underwriting (or at least help to underwrite) the cost to restore 4501 back to operating status.

Back when I worked there 8 years ago, I thought about doing a $45.01 campaign to raise the money needed to restore 4501, but 4501 is a bit on the big side for their local service, which is why they chose to let 4501 retire and focus on 630 instead.

How difficult is it going to be to come down and volunteer? I realize you have to be a member, which I am not, but I would like to help since I recently settled in the area. (Sevierville)
