If a simple, two cylinder steam locomotive has a bore 8" in diameter and a stroke of 14" and is connected to a 30" diameter driver, what is the minimum required steaming capacity of the boiler at 150psi to maintain 10mph on straight, level track? I am curious if there is a simple formula used by designers to ball park required steaming capacity.
