I'd like to hear from those who have put on Day out with Thomas events as to what your experiences were. Things like requirements from Gullane, the locomotive owners, periferal entertainment used, parking logistics, vendor arrangements, etc. Also, what advertising worked best, how did your group handle reservations, overall costs, etc. If you'd like to reply off-line my e-mail is hrvideo@mindspring.com

Thanks- Jim Herron

Jim,
Be prepared for various views of the same event.

But let me tell you now we have been preparing for our Thomas event.

We have not yet held our "Day out with Thomas;" but, let me tell you what we have done to research for our first time event. Of course, we were already holding an annual event that was youth orientated so many of the resources are in place (we just have to plan for more people).

After we were contacted by Gullane several of our people traveled to Chicago and took in the "Day out with Thomas" at IRM. While there they spoke with various people at IRM, counted cars and strollers, observed, took photos, and the like. One of the group prepared a 12-page report of the IRM event along with 50 photos.

Then one of these people found himself in the east on business when Strasburg had a Thomas weekend and he attended it.

Some of us attended the seminar last year at the ARM/TRAIN convention. Others will be in Sacramento this weekend and will observe the event at CSRM.

We hold monthly meetings to review process of both our Spring event (occurring in two weeks) and the Fall event (now Thomas in November) -- a separate meeting for each, one after another, along with a short session about other special events. Once we get done with one big event we critique it and after a short break we begin planning for next year.
