I'm working on an article on steam inspection engines and would love to know more about this one. I'm hoping someone on this board can help with information on what appears to be a large Missouri Kansas & Texas inspection car. A photo of it was in the Galveston Daily News, November 15, 1903, page 30. This is nearly a head on shot, with a narrow view down the right side of the car at an angle. It was described in a number of other press items as being about 20 feet long (it looks to be even longer) and could seat 12 – 15 in the front half, with the boiler taking up the rear part. The mechanical details are unknown other than it was steam powered. A smokestack is visible over the roof towards the middle of the car, suggesting it may have had a horizontal boiler. The body of the car seems to be six window bays long, with a door visible in the second window bay from the front. The front wall is largely of glass in three panels, shaped like a bay window, probably with a door in the center. There is a short front platform in front of this, possibly with the numeral “1” painted in its center. A large oil burning headlight is over this at the top front edge of the roof, with marker lamps at the front corners. Based on the news reports it seems likely that the car was in use as early as April 1902. It is much larger than the well known inspection car #2, photos of which are frequently found. |
