From Kauai Plantation Railway, concerning their two 36" gauge GE 25 ton Diesel Electirics, Gents: Boone Morrison from Kauai Plantation Railway here with a question about early GE engines. We have a 1942 GE 25 ton that we are rebuilding. The traction motor is hashed and we will be replacing it. We have located both the #733 (the stock motor), and a #741. We have confirmed that the mounting bolts for both will fit, so that is not the issue. However, as the engine is torn down now it is not possible to accurately judge if the PHYSICAL SIZE of the #741 will fit where the #733 was used. We know that the #741 was available as a way to upgrade the power a bit and that is what we have in our 1948 GE 25 ton, BUT, the mechanical arrangements on the '48 are not the same as the '42, so we cannot use that as a guide. Do any of you have information on this? We have got both traction motors available and are set to ship THIS WEDNESDAY... so, an early answer is essential!! When the '42 first arrived we did run it a bit and the #733 has sufficient power to haul the trains, but if the #741 will fit we might as well upgrade a bit while we are at it. There is a small cost savings with the #733, but we feel it would be worth it if there is an improvement overall and are willing to go for the more costly #741 if it fits. You may want to discuss the 733 vs. 741 motor question with Dennis Lavender of Western Star Rail Services, Newark, OH (740-344-3336). He's quite familiar with all the nuances of GE industrial locos and should be able to address your question. |
