Hello, I had come across this photo recently. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.crestlineroundhouse.org/images/engine/b004.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.crestlineroundhouse.org/engine.htm&usg=__nPwZ8zARaIsuqls_8SQeD2aK4VM=&h=497&w=652&sz=132&hl=en&start=3&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=0OfddjC7s5CPuM:&tbnh=105&tbnw=138&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcrestline%2Broundhouse%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dhp%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1R2ADFA_enUS388%26tbs%3Disch:1 The smoke jack was an interesting feature.....assuming its design was developed so the overhead crane could travel over it. (The crane was unique since it travelled in a semi-circle inside the bays of the roundhouse.) This would drive the need for a forced vacuum system for ventilation. If you look closely. The top of the stand-pipe has a "Y" branch and it appears each arm can swing independently, horizontally and vertically. Very interesting. Regards, Randy |

Randy - I believe I saw some photos quite a while ago of "regular" smoke jacks at Crestline. This was in a story of the efforts to save the roundhouse. I seem to recall that the effort was unsuccessful and the roundhouse was eventually torn down. That is a shame. More of a shame was that the smoke jacks were probably not saved. There are those museums out there (including ours) that have plans for the future to build a roundhouse or enginehouse where smoke jacks would be an important part. Saving parts like the smoke jacks would be useful to future projects. We should be trying to organize to save such items in the future. Les |
