Friday, August 13th, will be the anniversary of the Long Island Rail road's wreck at Calverton, Long Island, when the Shelter Island Express, led by D16sb 214 and Camelback Atlantic #3, picked a switch and ran into the wooden Golden Pickle Works building, demolishing the structure and causing many deaths. I was reminded by historian Dave Keller, and bring it here up because all the survivors of the accident are now dead, the wooden building was completely raised and never replaced, the locomotive were scrapped, and all the cars involved are gone. The station is no longer listed by the railroad as a stop. If not for the photographers and story tellers, there would be not a trace of this event today. I believe the year was 1926.
Preservation is essential.

Here is a story about it I found in the google news archive search, it was indeed 1926.

Note there is also a story about a train robbery on the UP two columns over to the right. What a wild time it must have been in the 1920's.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.
