LRC LOCOMOTIVE PRESERVED: Toronto Railway Heritage Center has acquired VIA Rail Canada LRC#6917 for preservation: Plans are to eventually move the locomotive to the Roundhouse Park, in Toronto, Ontario During the interim, the 6917 will reside on local shortline GTA. For more information on the 6917 restoration, visit the group's website at http://www.trha.ca/news.html .

This was built somewhere between 1981-84. Is this the newest loco officially preserved in North America?

Update: Maybe not: Wikipedia reports sister 6921 is preserved in Montreal......

One or more of the principals of model maker Rapido Trains, Inc. has been active with the preservation effort. These preservation efforts have been covered in the firm's website, Facebook account, and promotional emails.

Newest loco preserved? I thought those were the three QJ class steamers in the USA. They were all built in 1986. Interesting side note, until RJ Corman started building gensets, the QJ was the newest loco on the RJCC roster.

The suggestion of the QJ steamers raises the separate query of whether these three locos are officially "preserved"--i.e. are where they are because someone wants to preserve a Chinese QJ--or whether they are "consumable" tools still working to earn their keep.

Of course, we could make the same argument for or against the steam locos at the Strasburg, Grand Canyon, Durango & Silverton, etc. No one considers the MLW or F40PH locos at the Grand Canyon, or the PRR 44-tonner that the Strasburg sold to another line, to be "preserved artifacts," after all......

maybe if a particular engine is still being constructed, if not, when retired officially and sent off to museums/preservationists...prolly called "preserved".

but may say also something about the tunnel of steamers in Britain being held "just in case..."

Definitely not, UP1848 at IRM was built in 1988.
