In July 1976 Sloan Cornell (R.I.P.) somehow convinced Conrail, then in its infancy, to allow him to move his collection of equipment, then known as the Blairsville & Indiana RR, under its own power from Blairsville on the Conemaugh line to Gettysburg, there to take on a new life as the Gettysburg RR. Motive power was ex-Monongahela Ry BLH S12 407 and ex-Mississippian 2-8-0 76, the latter under steam but only working enough to keep the cylinders lubricated. Behind these two locos was Cornell's weird and wonderful collection of ancient cars, every one a contraption of some sort. With a Conrail pilot aboard the 407, this collection traveled the Conemaugh to Conpit Jct. and the mainline east to Harrisburg. It did get a Conrail diesel tied on ahead of the 407 to descend the East Slope. Accompanied by Ken Douglas, I chased this from Blairsville to Tyrone before darkness began to arrive. It was certainly one of the most incredible moves I've ever witnessed. Amazingly there were only minor problems along the way, as Sloan had done a lot of preparation work on his equipment.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.
