Whatever happened to the ex Milwaukee Road Combine that used to be at the Reader RR? Also, does anybody know its history? Did the Milwaukee put the open platforms on it, or was this a later addition. It appeared, from looking at a photo or two of the car, that it was, or was similar to the second group of cars built for the Hiawatha.

I don't know which car the Reader had, but the MILW did build several "Hiawatha-style" combines with open platforms during the 1930s, for use on branch lines.

The Reader's ex-MILW combine and ex-RI coaches went to the Indiana Railway Museum's French Lick West Baden & Southern RR. I believe the cars are still there.

Sorry, no info on the combine's earlier history.

Those combines were specifically built for branchline mixed trains. I was at the Union Depot Museum at Mendota, IL, yesterday and they have another one of these cars under restoration. It is presently coupled to an ex-SP diner that is also under restoration. The diner is painted in a medium blue and lettered for the Cadillac and Lake Cities.

By the way, whatever happened to the C&LC? I know they were running part of the Rock Island line east of Colorado Springs. Is anything left of their operation or are they kaput?

C&LC is long-kaput, and the three counties that owned the track had it removed in the 1990s, a pretty stupid move. A short piece of the line (I don't think it was part of the C&LC) remains just east of Colorado Springs; I think it is privately-owned and sees occasional speeder use. C&LC ran only Limon to Falcon, a washed out bridge west of Falcon prevented operations into the Springs itself. D&RGW got the trackage in C.S., and last I knew Up was still servicing it. Trolley group at C.S. has remains of the old Rock Island roundhouse in C.S..

Last I heard, the primary person of the C&LC operation was promoting an electric interurban line over the long-abandoned CS&CCD Short Line grade between C.S. and Cripple Creek, to serve gambling patrons....
