With the recent change of ownership of the SRNJ in south Jersey it is no longer a friendly place to have old, possible historic equipment. Three privately owned P70's which have been under restoration for years at Winslow Jct. now look to be among the first that will be scrapped in place. Others such as a LV parlor car may follow. Wow. P-70's are a rare breed. So many "saved" are now gone or good as gone. Rich, isn't the parlor car part of the ARHS collection? Rob |

It's amazing that in the day and age such seemingly rare equipment - for both display and use - are still candidates for scrapping. This is where an organization like the NHRS would be a value - spearheading a drive to save as much worthy equipment as possible and finding suitable homes by way a single organized effort to raise capital and awareness of such equipment - rather then peddling news letters (both almost monthly and annually) filled with stories already available via the local chapters and national magazines. That grants are a superb step in that direction, however. Those pieces would be right at home at Steamtown - a few more restorations and a few more pending restorations sitting on the yard's "un-dead line", they would at least have a chance for restoration, display and possible operation without adding too much additional clutter - clutter of which some of us find interesting in and of itself. /Mitch |

If only there was a forum on which offers of such equipment for sale could be posted, maybe connected with RyPN...........moderated by a real railroader from Ohio, perhaps. dave |

What is its current condition? Are the cars air brakes intact? We gotta know what we are trying to save folks! |

Rich, Have any of the owners of the P70s contacted Cape May Seashore Lines? I know they have a few of their own and perhaps they would be interesting in at least hosting the cars in storage until new locations could be found. In addition I believe they actually have trackage rights to Winslow on the CR Beesley's Point Sec. So in theory they would not technically be interchanged to a class one. Just some options in case they hadn't already been explored. Kevin |

Are the cars listed or is the offer stricly word of mouth? Short of funding a restoration locally, rather then risk selling for scrap, maybe listing the cars for sale would be beneficial? Such as ? http://www.sterlingrail.com/classifieds/ Both Trainorders and RYPN do have a classifieds section though I imagine it would be rather cumbersome to sort through each listing as they are not categorized. /Mitch |

The red P-70 is coupled to an Alco FA-2, last operated as LIRR powerpack 603. 603 is now owned by ARHS. That particular P-70 is/was the best of the three, and was restored to the point of being used behind 614 on some of the NJ Transit excursions several years back. |
