Does anyone know when and why the tender on 6077 was swapped out from an oil burner type to a coal carrying vanderbilt type tender? |

It was most likely done when she was put on display (definitely not in service). I guess someone didn't lke the look of the tender that she got from the 2-10-2. The tender that she has is most likely from an early Northern (one source says 6138) and is of a quite different design then the tender she had when new. This tender has a very heavy frame to the which the tank and coal bunker are attached. On later CN steam power, the frame of the tender was replaced by a a 1" thick plate that spanned the entire length of the tender, and to which the drawhead castings and bolsters were rivetted and welded. This tender also lacks a stoker motor, as it would seem that the early Northerns had their stoker engines mounted under the cab. If you visit the engine, you will see the drive shaft and what is left of the stoker screw. CN simply cut through all this in an awful attempt at backdating and kit bashes. There is also a small access hatch in the coal bunker, which I assume is to allow access to the gear box for the stoker screw. Believe it or not, these tenders weighed LESS then the the tenders used on more modern engines. The U-2-a tender weighed 263,500 lbs, while the tender on a U-2-e weighed 280, 250 lbs. Both tenders carried 18 tons of coal and 11,600 gallons of water. I'm guessing the plate frame was possibly cheaper/more durable/ or required less work then the frame that the older Northern's had. I also recall reading about the frames from the tenders of early Northerns being reused, possibly by stelco? These photos are From Grant Kingsland.

Some general views of the tender. The frame that the water tank and coal bunker sit on is evident. Compare these to the photos of 6069's tender.

Thanks Joe... could you make the pics any bigger though.. holy smokes! Shame they made a mess of the tender's stoker screw. |

I'd hate to make people squint! Those pictures are also half their original size... |

Thanks for the photos of the 6077. She looks pretty well cared for. Perhaps her tender suffered some damage of some type, and it was easier for CN to just furnish a tender from another retired steamer, than do any repairs before she was placed on display. I am glad that there is a third U-1-f class 4-8-2 in existance. BTW, I am curious as to why the wood blades on the semaphore train order board in the background are missing. Kind of destroys the effect I think. Les |

If she ever runs again, another tender swap! Looks pretty good for a cold weather static display. How's her jewelry? |
