Does anyone know what type of trucks New Haven's class NE-5 cabooses built by Pullman-Standard were originally equipped with?

I believe they were Fox trucks.

Richard:
These cars were built c. 1944, I find it highly unlikely that they ran on a Fox-style truck. Perhaps you were thinking of another class of cars?

They had a Bettendorf swing-motion truck, 33' wheels, 4 1/4" x 8" journal size, 12" center plate diameter. "NYNH&H" was cast in the side frames.

RMNE has both an NE-5 built 1944 (C-561) and an NE-6 (C-694, International Car 1948) each equipped with these trucks (with appropriate 1944 and 1948 casting dates).

All NYNH&H cabooses built during the 1920s had archbar trucks; some wood cabooses of that vintage were later refitted with cast side frame trucks.

Stephen, I stand corrected.

From this site: http://newbritainstation.com/ne-5

Trucks:
C-510 to C-584: Bettendorf Swing motion with Elliptical Springs and Roller Side Bearings
C-585 to C-634: Standard Truck Company Swing motion with Elliptical Springs and Roller Side Bearings

Same truck. Bettendorf went out of business in the mid-40s and SCTCo. obtained their design for this truck. It's somewhat generically known as a "Bettendorf Swing Motion Truck". It was produced right up to the end of caboose building in the early 1980s, used on cabs built by FGEX for Conrail and others ca. 1979-81. Roller bearings were standard on them by that time. RMNE's B&M C-72 steel caboose has these with roller bearings, applied during a 1975 rebuild program.

Thank you both! Now for the easy part- finding a pair with decent wheels and friction bearings!

I have been advised that an earlier class of New Haven cabooses ran on Fox trucks. I was only mostly wrong; and "mostly wrong" is partly right.*

*apologies to Miracle Max
