The owner was going to cut this up until I intervened and asked him to allow me to find it a new home. But I will caution you that he will cut this up if you try to get cute and find this on your own and bother him.

Here are the particulars. It was inside until 2002 when the building fell down. The kids have gotten to it but our Director of Maintenance says only the windows are broken and a few wires are gone. According to Jay Reed's book, I have identiifed it as a class II-B2 variation built between 1946 and 1953. It is on rail just long enough to keep it out of the dirt. It is not connected to any other rail nor is there any active rail nearby and it has friction bearings anyway. So this will have to be moved overland. And just to keep all of you from wasting your time, it is located in New Jersey. So before you ask for pictures, find out how much it will cost to move it and if you can afford it.

Ed, I'd be surprised if any qualified 501s had time enough to put together a committee to consider the idea and come back with a report and proposal to their BOD in less than a week. Few groups out there have the resources without the bureaucracy. Give it a month or so.

So true what Dave says. Very sad but true. Whether your an individual or a museum, most people or museum type 501s just can't jump on things with out towing a garbage barge of bureaucracy first. A shame too because sometimes you need to move quickly as the opportunity is often a short window. It took months to get a standard letter of acceptance for two semi loads of 80" rail. After numerous phone calls it finally happened. Meantime all the angle bars and tie plates were stolen by scrappers. Just can't seem to get some bureaucrat types to see the need to hustle.

Another example of a great opportunity lost because of bureaucracy was the purchase of the Polson #2 {sister to #70} back in the late 70's {I think}. When the Cadalac and Lake City was auctioned the current owner needed permission to purchase for the museum the locomotive at a cost of I think $5000. He and a few others had the money in hand and could of bought it for themselves, they had the museums best interest at hand and wanted the museum to have it. The BOD {at that time} said "no" not until we discuss it or have the next meeting or something to that extent. Well the engine went to someone else as the down payment holding the loco was withdrawn or the time limit ran out on the hold. Years later the same member bought the locomotive with a group of members for a whole lot more money. I know there is a need to control growth and spending, but a museum can loose out and need to remain flexible to capitalize and "seize the moment".

But the time and effort to placate the tire-kickers and foaming hordes with no ability to actually come up with a good offer and resources to carry it out isn't. Makes sense to weed it out as job one.

I have made an offer that if a new home cannot be found for the intact loco., that the owner allow it to be dismantled for parts to make two other crippled 80 tonners fully operational. We need a new engine for our 80 tonner, and another museum also needs a new engine for theirs. I have seen photos of the unit in question, and it would take a lot of work to restore in my estimation.
