Folks, looking at the picture in the link below it looks like 952 has similar tender steps as 565 once did. We have looked high and low and can't find the pair for 565. So we need to make them. Does anyone have a good color side view of 952? Thanks!

In this photo, is the cab on 952 a steel cab? Is that the cab she currently has at the MofT? I seem to recall photos of the 952 with a wood cab. If so, did the Lackawanna change the cab?

One other question. When was this particular photo taken?

Thanks.

Les, not sure where that was taken. It may be from the collection of a gentleman named Joe Conrad. He was an engineer on the DL&W.

DL&W changed the cab when they backdated the engine as Oswego & Syracuse #1 post WWII. Within the past 10 years, the MOT completed a cosmetic restoration of the 952 which included application a correct metal cab based on original drawings. There were some comments on how the lettering isn't quite right, but thankfully with a new cab and under roof, she's in the best condition she has been in more than 70 odd years!

Would love to see 952 temporarily loaned to Steamtown and displayed with 565 after the restoration is done. Is any DL&W or Scranton/Steamtown anniversary coming up?

A google image search of DL&W 952 will result in 952 shown in various states of cabs/livery.

Guys, some more info on the picture and Joe Conrad.
Hello Sir,
I saw the photo over on RYPN that you posted a link from my DL&W page on Facebook. The photo was taken by my Father Ralph Conrad in 1924 , The year I was born. The photo was taken at Kingston, PA. along the Bloomsburg Branch.
She was in service then. She is sporting a all steel cab. which she was delivered from Alco when brand new.

I still say your having way to much fun Sir. :)

I started with the DL&W in 1942 , I worked for the DL&W from 1942 - 1961 I then worked for Eire - Lackawanna from 1961 - 1976. I then worked for Conrail from 1976 - 1987 a total of 47 years. I served in the US Army Railroad for 3 years during World War II. State side. I left the Service at rank of Sargent First Class

Steve,

I'll be in St Louis on Columbus Day. I'll try and get a couple shots for you.

Steve,
The information you seek for the step casting may be in the Steamtown archives. This casting was a "common" part on many locomotives and may even have been supplied to and or used by other builders. Check with Pat McNight and Chris Ahrens, if you have not already done so, as the drawings might be closer than you think.

Railway Restoration Project 113 had commercial patterns made for the new step castings on CNJ 113's tender. Take a look at photos of the steps on the tender and see if they are what you want. If so, call Bob at the station in Minersville and talk to him. The castings required little work to finish, had the tread cast in and are otherwise very nice. The olde steps were given away long ago and are not available. Of course, these castings are not cheap but it would be nice to see the patterns used again.

Hi Bernie! I looked at your tender and it looks like you only have 2 steps. 565 has 3. Plus it looks like the bottom flares out alot more than 565. Thanks anyway.
